4 Flax Drying
Dryer, Brattice or Conveyor - A drying machine in which the wet straw is spread on a travelling brattice and passes through the requisite drying chambers or tunnel. Dryer, Conveyor - See Dryer, Brattice or Conveyor. Dryer, Direct Heat - A drying machine in which the heat is supplied by flue gases from the combination of flax waste or other products. Dryer, Steam Heat - A drying machine in which the heat is supplied by means of steam coils or radiators. Dryer, Tray - A drying machine in which the straw is spread on trays which are inserted into the drying sections of the machine. Drying, Artificial - The wet retted straw is dried under cover, usually in a drying machine or chamber by the application of heat or air or both. Drying, Field - The wet retted straw is dried in the open, usually by standing up large handfuls on their root ends in cone forms, or gaits (q.v.). Laminating, or Pressing - The operation of passing wet retted straw through steel or other pressure rollers to squeeze out a proportion of the water or gummy fluids. 5 Ball Sizing
Consists of three processes, sizing, drying and beaming. Used for coloured warps or for grey warps about 24's and lower, that are to be heavy sized, such as for heavy domestics, Wigans, etc. This system gives a leather-like feel to the yam and cloth, and is much used in the Rochdale district. The yam is not flattened as it is in tape sizing. For coloured work it is very suitable, owing to the shorter length, various colours, etc. The warp, in the form of a rope, is taken through the size trough (passing under and over rollers at the bottom). The excess size is squeezed out and the warp dried by passing over hot cylinders, then wound on to the weaver's beam. This system is very suitable for short warps, but is more expensive than tape sizing. A sectional view of the machine is shown in the illustration. A is the ball warp, it passes through eyes C and C1 down to rollers D and E in size box R. Then around rollers F. These rollers are free to move in groove S, and they press the yarn from roller F1 to F9. From the sizing, the yarn is squeezed between G and H, passes round J and between J and K, where it is squeezed again on to a guide; roller L and into box M. From M the yarn is taken to a drying machine and, after drying, it is reballed. The screw N regulates the pressure put upon the size by roller K -
6 Stentering
A process of drying fabrics at full width. The stentering machine is furnished with an endless chain at each side, equipped with clips or pins which grip the selvedges of the cloth to be dried and pull it sideways to the required width at which the cloth is carried through the machine by the moving chains and dried. -

8 Fourdrinier, Henry
SUBJECT AREA: Paper and printing[br]b. 11 February 1766 London, Englandd. 3 September 1854 Mavesyn Ridware, near Rugeley, Staffordshire, England[br]English pioneer of the papermaking machine.[br]Fourdrinier's father was a paper manufacturer and stationer of London, from a family of French Protestant origin. Henry took up the same trade and, with his brother Sealy (d. 1847), devoted many years to developing the papermaking machine. Their first patent was taken out in 1801, but success was still far off. A machine for making paper had been invented a few years previously by Nicolas Robert at the Didot's mill at Essonnes, south of Paris. Robert quarrelled with the Didots, who then contacted their brother-in-law in England, John Gamble, in an attempt to raise capital for a larger machine. Gamble and the Fourdriniers called in the engineer Bryan Donkin, and between them they patented a much improved machine in 1807. In the new machine, the paper pulp flowed on to a moving continuous woven wire screen and was then squeezed between rollers to remove much of the water. The paper thus formed was transferred to a felt blanket and passed through a second press to remove more water, before being wound while still wet on to a drum. For the first time, a continuous sheet of paper could be made. Other inventors soon made further improvements: in 1817 John Dickinson obtained a patent for sizing baths to improve the surface of the paper; while in 1820 Thomas Crompton patented a steam-heated drum round which the paper was passed to speed up the drying process. The development cost of £60,000 bankrupted the brothers. Although Parliament extended the patent for fourteen years, and the machine was widely adopted, they never reaped much profit from it. Tsar Alexander of Russia became interested in the papermaking machine while on a visit to England in 1814 and promised Henry Fourdrinier £700 per year for ten years for super-intending the erection of two machines in Russia; Henry carried out the work, but he received no payment. At the age of 72 he travelled to St Petersburg to seek recompense from the Tsar's successor Nicholas I, but to no avail. Eventually, on a motion in the House of Commons, the British Government awarded Fourdrinier a payment of £7,000. The paper trade, sensing the inadequacy of this sum, augmented it with a further sum which they subscribed so that an annuity could be purchased for Henry, then the only surviving brother, and his two daughters, to enable them to live in modest comfort. From its invention in ancient China (see Cai Lun), its appearance in the Middle Ages in Europe and through the first three and a half centuries of printing, every sheet of paper had to made by hand. The daily output of a hand-made paper mill was only 60–100 lb (27–45 kg), whereas the new machine increased that tenfold. Even higher speeds were achieved, with corresponding reductions in cost; the old mills could not possibly have kept pace with the new mechanical printing presses. The Fourdrinier machine was thus an essential element in the technological developments that brought about the revolution in the production of reading matter of all kinds during the nineteenth century. 11 Backwashing
When the scoured wool has been thoroughly opened in the carder, it is generally somewhat dingy in colour - due to dirt which has not been removed in the scouring bowl, owing to the stapled condition of the material. The function of the backwash is to effect the removal of this, along with any dust, dirt, etc., collected while the material has been passing through the carder. In recent arrangements this machine receives the slivers after they have been delivered into cans or made into balls by the card or the preparing gill boxes. After passing through the wash bowls, squeezing heads, and drying chamber, the sliver is carried into a suitable gill box situated at the end of the drying chamber. The wool is then ready for further gilling before being made up into balls for the combs. -
12 Radcliffe, William
SUBJECT AREA: Textiles[br]b. 1761 Mellor, Cheshire, Englandd. 1842 Mellor, Cheshire, England[br]English inventor of the sizing machine.[br]Radcliffe was brought up in the textile industry and learned carding and spinning as a child. When he was old enough, he became a weaver. It was a time when there were not enough weavers to work up all the yarn being spun on the recently invented spinning machines, so some yarn was exported. Radcliffe regarded this as a sin; meetings were held to prohibit the export, and Radcliffe promised to use his best endeavours to discover means to work up the yarn in England. He owned a mill at Mellor and by 1801 was employing over 1,000 hand-loom weavers. He wanted to improve their efficiency so they could compete against power looms, which were beginning to be introduced at that time.His first step was to divide up as much as possible the different weaving processes, not unlike the plan adopted by Arkwright in spinning. In order to strengthen the warp yarns made of cotton and to reduce their tendency to fray during weaving, it was customary to apply an adhesive substance such as starch paste. This was brushed on as the warp was unwound from the back beam during weaving, so only short lengths could be treated before being dried. Instead of dressing the warp in the loom as was hitherto done, Radcliffe had it dressed in a separate machine, relieving the weaver of the trouble and saving the time wasted by the method previously used. Radcliffe employed a young man names Thomas Johnson, who proved to be a clever mechanic. Radcliffe patented his inventions in Johnson's name to avoid other people, especially foreigners, finding out his ideas. He took out his first patent, for a dressing machine, in March 1803 and a second the following year. The combined result of the two patents was the introduction of a beaming machine and a dressing machine which, in addition to applying the paste to the yarns and then drying them, wound them onto a beam ready for the loom. These machines enabled the weaver to work a loom with fewer stoppages; however, Radcliffe did not anticipate that his method of sizing would soon be applied to power looms as well and lead to the commercial success of powered weaving. Other manufacturers quickly adopted Radcliffe's system, and Radcliffe himself soon had to introduce power looms in his own business.Radcliffe improved the hand looms themselves when, with the help of Johnson, he devised a cloth taking-up motion that wound the woven cloth onto a roller automatically as the weaver operated the loom. Radcliffe and Johnson also developed the "dandy loom", which was a more compact form of hand loom and was also later adapted for weaving by power. Radcliffe was among the witnesses before the Parliamentary Committee which in 1808 awarded Edmund Cartwright a grant for his invention of the power loom. Later Radcliffe was unsuccessfully to petition Parliament for a similar reward for his contributions to the introduction of power weaving. His business affairs ultimately failed partly through his own obstinacy and his continued opposition to the export of cotton yarn. WORSTED, BACKWASHINGWhen scoured wool has been partly processed, it undergoes a further washing process carried out to give the wool the cleanest possible appearance. This process is known as back-washing, and is carried out on wool in sliver form, e.g., carded, prepared or combed. The machine has two bowls, the first with a weak alkali detergent to cleanse the wool, and the second bowl to rinse and wash away dirt, etc. The slivers are fed to the machine from cams and after washing and drying are passed through a gill-box.
